The History of Bear’s Ale House & Eatery

Bear's Bloomington, INWelcome to Bear’s Place in beautiful Bloomington, Indiana. Bear’s Place as been a Bloomington and Indiana University tradition for great food, frosty libations and amazing entertainment since 1972.

As you walk into Bears Place you enter our under 21 room and instantly feel the charm and tradition of years past. The classic wood booths and wall decor remain as they were years ago. Whether you are stopping in for a quick lunch our planning on staying for a few hours with friends you will love this room at Bear’s Place. Continuing through Bears past the dining area you will enter our full service bar, commonly known as the “Bear Cave”. The Bear Cave is a classic, cozy, bar room with a working fireplace that adds comfort on those cold Indiana nights. The Bear Cave is also where we create our ‘Almost World Famous’ Hairy Bear. The Hairy Bear lives up to its name with six-eight shots of liquor and our secret formula that’s been enjoyed over the years. Survive a Hairy Bear and your assured a memorable night, limit two please! The Bear Cave also has a long list of craft beers supporting great Indiana craft brewers. You are sure to find your favorite brew or discover your new favorite brew on tap at Bear’s Place. The Bear Cave is a wonderful place to join friends or meet new friends for a few hours of your day, but don’t forget to checkout our event room just past the bar area.

The event room at Bears currently hosts the longest running Jazz show in the region. Jazz Fables is a well-known and respected jazz show hosted every Thursday evening at Bear’s Place. Jazz Fables has featured great artists such as David Baker, Domnica Spera, Al Cobine as well as Indiana University’s Jacob School of Music faculty and students. The event center is also the venue that started stand-up comedy in the area. Bears Place h1517877_721035194619333_4540744961494986473_nas a long and respect tradition in the comedy culture and has hosted comics such as Ellen DeGeneres and Roseanne Barr. The event room is also where we have our weekly Karaoke, or as we call it Bearyoke. Music is a passion of ours at Bear’s so we continue to have local and regional acts of all genres performing in the event room. Bear’s Place event room can also be reserved for private parties or company outings. We are very excited about our schedule renovations in this area, with better facilities and incredible sound so our shows are sure to be even more memorable.
